spscific gravity

    spscific gravity

spscific gravity  :-

is the ratio between the  weight of a

mineral anan equal volume of water .

it is based on Archimeds principle which

states that any substance weighs less in a

fluid than it does in water and that the lost

weight is the equivalent of the fluid it

 displaces

if you a smple of gold weighing say  100

grams it will weigh about 94.82 grams when

immeresd in water .

the weight lost is 5.18 grams

specific gravity of gold =100 ÷5.18

                                  =19.3

it means the gold is 19.3 times as heavy as

the same volume of water

the specific gravity  of minerals ranges from 1

to23

but the average for all minerals is only aboyt

2.6

 to measure specific gravity :-

1- weight a specimen in air .

2- then weight it in weater .

the specific gravity is the weight a specimen in

air divided by the difference between its weight

in air and its weight in weater

            measuring specific gravity

spscific gravity is the ratio between the weight

of a substance and an equal of water .

to measure spscific gravity ,

first weight a substance in air in fig. above left

and then weight in water in fig.above right ,

spscific gravity  :-is the weight of substance in

air , divided by the difference between its

weight in air and its in weater.
